Making Summer Memories Safely

Summer offers countless opportunities to create meaningful moments with the people we love. Whether it's enjoying a family barbecue, watching grandchildren play in the yard, sitting on the porch with a cool drink, or taking in a beautiful sunset, these simple experiences often become our most treasured memories.
Â

At Medcare Hospice, we believe that quality of life is about continuing to enjoy these special moments whenever possible. While spending time outdoors can lift our spirits and bring families together, it's also important to stay safe in the summer heat and protect ourselves from the sun.
Â
Here are a few simple ways to enjoy the outdoors comfortably:
Choose cooler times of the day. Morning or early evening is often more comfortable than the midday heat.
Find the shade. A covered patio, umbrella, or shady tree can make outdoor visits much more enjoyable.
Stay hydrated. Encourage frequent sips of water or other approved fluids, even before feeling thirsty.
Protect your skin. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) and wear lightweight clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses when appropriate.
Watch for signs of overheating. Fatigue, dizziness, confusion, headache, or nausea may indicate it's time to move indoors and cool down.
Know your medications. Some medications can make the skin more sensitive to sunlight, so ask your healthcare provider if extra precautions are needed.
Remember, you don't have to spend hours outside to make lasting memories. Even a few peaceful minutes on the porch, listening to birds, feeling a gentle breeze, or sharing stories with family can provide comfort, connection, and joy.
Â
At Medcare Hospice, our goal is to help patients and families focus on what matters most: making meaningful memories together while supporting comfort, dignity, and quality of life every step of the way.

This summer, enjoy the sunshine safely, cherish the moments that matter, and take care of yourself and those you love.
