ALS Awareness Month: Understanding ALS and Why Compassionate Support Matters

Every May, ALS Awareness Month brings attention to Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, a progressive neurological condition that affects a person’s ability to move, speak, eat, and eventually breathe independently.

While ALS is considered rare, its impact on patients, families, and caregivers is life-changing.

Symptoms often begin subtly with muscle weakness, twitching, difficulty speaking, or changes in coordination. Over time, everyday tasks that many of us take for granted can become increasingly difficult. Although there is currently no cure, specialized care, emotional support, and palliative services can make a meaningful difference in quality of life.

This month is also an opportunity to recognize the incredible strength of caregivers and healthcare professionals who walk alongside patients through every stage of the journey. Compassionate care is not only about managing symptoms. It is about preserving dignity, providing comfort, and ensuring patients and families feel supported and heard.

Raising awareness matters. Education encourages earlier recognition, supports ongoing research efforts, reduces stigma, and helps build stronger communities of support for those affected by ALS.

Whether through sharing educational resources, supporting ALS organizations, participating in awareness efforts, or simply checking in on a family navigating this diagnosis, every act of compassion matters.

At Medcare Hospice, we believe every person deserves to be treated with dignity, empathy, and respect throughout their healthcare journey.
